"If you dont have the time to do it right, then you dont have the time to do it twice"
Chehalis Consulting Ltd.
Since 1997, built by and for the primary industries of BC
Humble Beginnings (1997 - 2006)
Started in 1997, Chehalis Consulting Ltd. first started serving the forest industry in BC as the industry had a need for expertise for geotechnical services in the forest sector. At this time, the firm was set up as the corporate entity to undertake challenges in the forest sector completing several hundred assignments in Coastal and Interior terrain in BC, for some 30 clients.
In 2005, in response to the reorganization of the forest sector, the company went into a hiatus and realigned itself to manage its internal assets. At this time, the principals were working for others for a number of years. Some of the projects undertaken by the principals of the Company while in the employ of others were the Geotechnical Engineer of Record for the following projects:
East Toba Hydro Electric Project, in the Toba Inlet of BC,
Montrose HEP, in the Toba Inlet of BC,
4 projects in the Harrison Lake area of BC, known as the Cloudworks Projects (Fire, Douglas, Stokke, and Tipella Creeks)
2 projects in the Upper Stave Lake area of BC, known as the Cloudworks Stave Lake Projects (Lamont and Upper Stave)
In 2014, the company realigned to be a consultant for BC Hydro, largely employed as a resident engineer and part of the construction management team for the Ruskin Dam Refurbishment Project, in Mission, BC. During this time, other consulting assignments were carried out under the project portfolio not related to BC Hydro included:
concept feasibility and design of Hunter Creek HEP,
front end engineering design for Sakwi Creek HEP in the Harrison Lake area of BC,
Front end engineering design for Threthwey Creek HEP in Harrison Lake area.
Hiatus / Dormancy (2006-2021)
In 2005, in response to the reorganization of the forest sector, the company went into a hiatus and realigned itself to manage its internal assets. At this time, the principal was employed by others for a number of years.
In 2006 - 2008, a brief stint in Business Development for Hazco Corporation (Now Tervita Corporation) involved marketing, proposal writing, estimating, and procurement of environmental projects.
In 2008, Knight Piesold Ltd. of Vancouver BC, reached out to seek expertise for the run-of-river projects it was providing FEED for in the East Toba River area, as well as the Cloudworks Cluster in the Fraser Valley areas of BC. During this time, assumption of several projects as the Geotechnical Engineer of Record was taken, some of which are still the largest run-of-river projects in BC even today. In addition, during the power call of 2010, several projects were assessed for feasibility and for cost estimation all over BC at this time. In 2010, as the projects came to a close and construction was nearly complete,
In 2013, the principal left Kiewit Corporation and became the Geotechnical Manager at the Evergreen LRT project, in the employ of MDH Engineering Ltd., a recent purchase of SNC-Lavalin Inc. During this time, management of the SNC Geotechnical Practice in the Vancouver office was organized by Mr. SIngh, until his resignation in 2014.
In 2014, the company realigned to be a consultant for BC Hydro, largely employed as a resident engineer and part of the construction management team for the Ruskin Dam Refurbishment Project, in Mission, BC. This full time position as a contractor (seconded through Chehalis Consulting Ltd.) was to provide design coordination, resident engineering and construction management services as part of the Owners team for Contract B of this project which included right bank excavation works, grade restoration, intake repairs and refurbishment of the intake gates, and roads and access works.
In 2016, employment was through Vancouver Pile Driving Ltd. (North Vancouver) where as a project sponsor level, provided oversight of the wharf demolition and temporary design works (falsework) for the pile driving for the Marine Offloading Facility at G3 Grain Terminal in North Vancouver, BC. Other projects worked on during this time included project management and oversight of conventional pile driving assignments. stone column installations and oversight of the assembly and installation of the TMEP marine barrier in the North Vancouver yards for the Transmountain Expansion project.
In 2017, as the project list for Chehalis was rapidly expanding, we once again were seconded to BC Hydro. Initially retained to provide construction management and site coordination activities for a multi-employer workplace in Iskut BC, on the NW Iskut line extension. Shortly after returning to BC Hydro, a request was made by a former supervisor who was now at Site C, for assistance in that project. Initially retained to manage site safety coordination on a very complex workplace involving complex works and commercial and safety issues, we were then asked to take on the Senior Construction Manager role on an Interim Basis, managing all aspects of the Main Civil Works Contract, until 2019.
Due to personal reasons, in October 2019, returning to the Lower Mainland of BC, employment was through Kiewit Corporation on a secondment to the Transmountain Expansion Project, Westridge Terminal Onshore Construction, which involved management of several field engineers, superintendents, and approximately 150 craft employees. After this brief appointment, a six month assignment in Estimating, a decision was made to leave conventional employment and focus once again on projects for Chehalis Consulting Ltd. in 2021.
Realignment
In 2014, the company was reactivated out of dormancy in response to contract opportunities which formed the nucleus of the works on major projects as per above. However, during this time, several other projects were also undertaken on a part time basis between 2014 and 2021, and then since 2021, on a full time project-by-project basis.
Today.....and the future.....
"If you think professional is expensive, wait until you see the true cost of amateur."
Our diverse range of experience in natural hazards, roads, infratstructure, dams, hydropower, transmission lines, construction management, resident engineering, deep foundations, shallow foundations, retaining structures, tunnelling, etc. we have a unique perspective on projects, both big and small. Compounded with our experience with the many contractor models (design build, bid build, EPC, hybrid) and our versatility in roles (Owner, Designer or Contractor), there are very few experiences that we have not seen and challenges we have not overcome.
"If you dont have the time or money to do it right, then how will you have the money to do it twice?"
Our mantra is simple. Do it once, do it right, and dont do it again. Every challenge is to be overcome and needs the right solution. The solution is based on the right combination of experience, technical expertise and pragmatism, which we are happy to provide. No one likes rework, or doing work for free, but the right work at the right price with the right result is the most optimal solution of all.
Our mission
Our Mission is to service our clientele in the most efficient way possible,
Our vision
We want to live in a world where people can buy homes that match their needs rather than having to find a compromise and settle on the second-best option. That's why we take a lot of time and care in getting to know our clients from the moment they reach out to us and ask for our help.
Our team
Our primary principal is Raveen R. Singh, P.Eng. who graduated from UBC Geological Engineering in the late 1990s, and has well over 35 years of experience in the geotechnical engineering sector. Experience has been diverse, working for owners, designers, and contractors alike have led to a multi-faceted approach to problem solving which, when combined with many years of experience on projects both big and small, have led to innovative solutions with a win-win approach.
